Cooking Traditions

One of my favorite hobbies is cooking, and I feel blessed that I love it!

Cooking is a necessity in life, because unless you have your own chef or can afford to eat out all the time, you’ll need to cook from home.

My cooking passion has been passed down to me by two generations of amazing cooks.  I am no Tyler Florence or Julia Child – I don’t stand in my kitchen, look in my well stocked pantry (be sure to see the pantry list) and just whip up something.  Many people can – I was not gifted that way, but given the passion being a foodie – reading cookbooks from cover to cover, scouring cooking magazines for tips and recipes and my favorite – asking my family & friends for family recipes!

My Grandma Wess was an amazing cook – she also treasured her cookbooks and cooking tools.  We visited her once a year in Florida and had the pleasure to stay with her for a week and she lovingly made dinner every night.  The three dishes I remember the most:  Floating Islands (a custard desert), her Baked Tomato & Cheese Rice and the best Banana Fritters.  I was around 10 at the time, and we had spent the day at the beach and came home sun tanned and salty and she made these Banana Fritters – I don’t know if it was because she made amazing Fritters or if I was starving – but I loved them so much and had three servings….I can still taste them today!

Recently I asked my cousins and aunts for that recipe – luckily one of them had it.  I made it for my boys and I am sure Grandma Wess was there in spirit enjoying them too!

If you haven’t done so already, start collecting your favorite family recipes. My grandmother passed away when I was young, but oh how I wish I would’ve had the chance to sit down with her and get her recipes!  So get your family to give you your mom’s lasagna, your dad’s grilled pizza, your aunt’s Clam Dip, whatever your favorite is.  When you make those recipes – it’s a great to think of your family and the memories you shared with them!
